  • UX/ UI is Two-Faceted: It Cleans and Plants Seeds.

“If you stay on the right track for too long, you could get run over.” ~ Will Rogers, American Satirist
Here are some working thoughts on the difference between UX and UI:

UX/ UI is Two-Faceted: It Cleans and Plants Seeds:

UX Designers originally were ergonomists for the digital arena. Our intent was to make the interface as accessible, and easy to use, as possible. We succeeded. Nowadays, UX designers are “interior designers” for websites. They follow contemporary trends (such as “responsive websites”), using accessibility guidelines that have now become commonplace (as have most SEO practices).
User Interface architects interpret UX findings, (which can also include usability studies, research, competitive positioning, etc.) to build conceptual models that can be used throughout most stages of development – from specification writing to use case analyses to QA testing.
User Interface Architects are Structural Engineers for websites. We assess the relationship of objects and provide ideal taxonomy for categories and navigation, in addition to ideal journey to destination flows.
Both are Digital Strategists, and they work in concert.
UX4UI Experts audit processes, systems and design, and then provide a report that summarizes findings and provides recommendations on how to best move forward. UI4UI experts are equally logical and creative. We can’t help but improve all that we see. Our minds naturally ideate.

2020 UX DIGITAL STRATEGY SIGNPOSTS FOR HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN

    [divider line_type=”Small Line” custom_height=”40″]

ONE  VISCERAL INTELLIGENCE – the ability to sense, predict and act upon knowledge of an environment or situation.

    • Visceral intelligence uses animation, voice, gestures, and other bio-mechanical cues in accomplishing digital tasks.
    • An intentional interface aligns with the intuition, expectations and desires of humans.
    • The expectation is that a site/ ecosphere will be unique – and user is competent enough to navigate. Complex does not have to be complicated.

TWO  REAL CHANGES OF STATE – Users expect to be moved and anticipate movement.

    • Call and response is pervasive. Each site, app or platform should feel alive, even those without social notifications.
    • The hands and eyes of users are prepared to operate a virtual journey, engaged in a particular ecosphere, created by your business.
    • Colors, animation and font tell a story of the journey, acting as clues/ signposts for what is ahead.
    • Action/ reaction satisfies those who need personal affirmation, as well as those who require affirmation.

THREE  WASTE REMOVAL – An acknowledgment that the journey is paramount.

    • Minimalism has resulted in: removal of non-value added content and waste. Nothing should stand in the way of Users’ Journey to Destination.
    • Standardizing/ reduction of variation has taken a backseat (and now resides in the subconscious), so consistency of the basics are expected to be universal and ubiquitous.
    • Users expect error-free websites. Clean websites inspire confidence in the company.

FOUR   THE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE – Individuals are ‘accepted’ for unique preferences.

    • User preferences during the past two decades have transformed usability standards. The old heuristic of “belonging” has been replaced by a need to be fulfilled. Users want to get the job done.
    • Scrolling is preferred to clicking, since it’s faster. There should be multiple ways for users to arrive at destinations. It’s the sweet spot between just enough and too much.
    • Basic “good rules of thumb,” like Content Chunking have expanded. Concepts like blocks are now pervasive. Every floor of a user interface tells a story.

FIVE  DISRUPTIVE UBIQUITY – Users expect omnipresence.

    • Today’s marketplace is saturated. Users are well aware that they have choices, many of which they’ve yet to discover. They expect you to be everywhere available.
    • Brands should have a full deck of digital assets, easily accessible on all platforms and devices, without hiccup.
    • Produce Delight – The user experience should be enjoyable, and leave a good, lasting impression. This isn’t a new thing, yet it’s more crucial than ever before.

The High Expectations of User 4.2

    [divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”40″]

    ONE

Today’s user (let’s just call them User 4.2) is autonomous, curious, unique, and, for the most part, enjoys interacting with websites.

    TWO

User 4.2 wants to affect change, even if it’s superficial (colors/ shapes/ size).

    THREE

User 4.2 recognizes common symbols, as well as signposts. They know that a symbol will likely produce options, and they are prepared to proactively engage in their user journey.

    FOUR

While devs (and everyone’s a dev nowadays) have mastered  the logic of “restrictive choice,” User 4.2 insists upon being plural.

    FIVE

They are used to, and almost patient about, systematic improvement. Agile development, innovation and sites in flux are viewed neutrally, and often with anticipation.

    The Evolution of Utility

    [divider line_type=”Small Line” custom_height=”40″]

JAKOB NIELSEN DEVISED USABILITY HEURISTICS IN 1995 that, during the past two decades, became widely adopted as normative web standards, and ultimately evolved into UX Best Practices.

    To sum them up:

    • visibility/ consistency – being able to see, learn and recognize

    • accessibility/ flexibility – ease of use

    • minimalist design – the omission of non value-added content and standardization of design elements

    • error prevention – originally good UX practice, but is now an expectation; and

    • speedy access to help.

While these five usability tenets remain critical, user consciousness has expanded during the past 20 years, with the creation of millions of user personas. User 4.2s’ engineering skills and marketing acumen has also grown, along with their awareness of omnipresent potential. Users today have advanced expectations that their preferences be met throughout the journey to destination, almost as much as demand for quick arrival/ success. Digital strategy research centered on human preference modeling indicates that users expect web/ app experiences to be aligned with their expectations of:

    • effective and expedient flow (roadblock and error free)

    • intelligent (absorbent, recalculating)

    • aware (topical, clever and mindful)

    • competent/ secure/ credible (no worries/ expectations are met)

    • emotional satisfaction/ appeal (attainment)

    • advanced preferences are important (no more dumbing down)

    • intersectional (ability to interact cross-web/ transcend pronouns).
